Job Summary


In collaboration with BD Emergency Health Services, Nisga’a Valley Health Authority is developing a Nisga’a Emergency Response Team. In recognising the importance of building the Nation’s capacity to respond and transport medical emergencies, NVHA is looking for the right candidate who is excited about emergency care. NVHA is ready and willing to train the right individual who is willing to commit for the duration of the pilot project and beyond as funding becomes available.


The EMR supports the delivery of emergency and life saving services and/or transportation to individuals living on Nisga’a Lands.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • With the support of NVHA, successfully complete pre requisites and full EMR training Train to meet the qualifications required to become an EMR
  • Act as a first responder, transporter or support for other medical health professional
  • Provide quality patient care in pre-hospital emergency situations
  • Ensure safe and efficient patient care and transportation
  • Provide emergency medical care until a more senior health professional/and or patient is at a health center or hospital
  • Enhance service delivery and patient care by identifying issues and strategies for addressing complex problems or concerns.
  • Assist the driver with safe operation of the ambulance
  • Ensure all vehicles are properly stocked, cleaned and sanitizes prior to each shift and between patient transports
  • Assist the Unit Chief and Ambulance driver maintain the station and ambulance in a tidy and clean working order.

Qualifications & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent,
  • Level 3 OFA First Aid an asset but not required,
    • NVHA will provide training
  • Poses or willingness to upgrade to Emergency Medical Responder
  • Physically able to carry out the duties of the position
  • A Class 5 Drivers License - willing to upgrade to class 4 Unrestricted License
  • Clean current driver’s abstract 
  • Strong mental resiliency and maturity
  • Ability to function well in stressful and situations
  • Willingness to participate in counselling/support/debriefings as required
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to function effectively in a highly dynamic environment
  • Knowledge of Nisga’a Language and Culture would be an asset
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Provide a Criminal Record Search
