 Nisga’a Valley Health Authority (NVHA) oversees four Health- and Wellness facilities located across the Traditional Nisga’a Territory. Located 100 km Northwest of Terrace, bordering British Columbia's rugged Northwest coast, the Nisga'a Lands are blessed with soaring mountains, dramatic lava beds, picturesque fjords, and thriving rivers and crystal-clear streams.

 

Currently NVHA has recently redeveloped our Health Care Delivery/Health Promotion Service Model and is seeking vibrant, self-motivated and innovative individuals interested in playing an integral part of cutting-edge Indigenous Health Programming and Service Delivery within the beautiful Nisga’a Territory. The role of Life Skills Coordinator, is primarily responsible for:


Job Description

 

Answering to the Wellness Team Lead, the Life Skills Worker is responsible for

Assisting youth under care to build competencies, which will allow them to live independently. It is the chief role of the worker to source out, arrange or facilitate activities that will raise the capacity and increase the self-esteem and wellness of youth; providing activities that develop life skills; build capacity and independence in residents. The worker will also work to develop and identify opportunities for staff development. They will work with all youth housed in all NVHA programs.  The worker will ensure that NVHA is represented in a professional, responsible, and respectful manner at all times.

 

Program Delivery

  • Work with local community organizations and groups to develop life skill programming

              that includes, but is not limited to: financial literacy, employment skills, hygiene, health,

              food literacy, drug awareness, mental wellness, educational planning, first aid, youth leadership, relationship building, self-esteem, networking skills, arts and

              music.

  • Continually develop a roster of events, in collaboration with Mental Health Team, CCHR’s Team and Traditional Health and Wellness Department that will engage and attract youth;
  • Identify and build opportunities and spaces for youth to build their own programming and

             social networks

  • Work in collaboration with Director of Operations and Executive Director to develop and build linkages to like-minded agencies in the community and, thus, develop ongoing professional

            development opportunities for staff;

  • Coordinate regular adult and youth events for all programs to encourage community

             building;

  • Work with NVHA staff to develop weekly meetings with residents in all houses and

              programs to steer life skills program according to the needs of the youth;

  • Work closely with all NVHA staff to adjust programming according to current youth

              capacities and needs;

  • Provide Executive Director and Director of Operations with weekly reports on

             current activities.

  • As the occasion arises, to facilitate in-house programs.

 



Administrative Duties


  • Defines a clear set of goals and of life-skills themes to be covered;
  • Submits monthly reports including, but not limited to the number of sessions,

Attendance, activities and the various topics and themes that were addressed;

  • Follows up, as needed, with community agencies to continue to build and grow program;
  • Submits receipts for materials and activities monthly;
  • Assists with program development, implementation and evaluation;
  • Provides leadership in maintaining satisfactory community relationships;
  • Adhere to NVHA Policy and Procedures while in the workplace and during activities off

              site;

  • At times, accepts responsibility for tasks, as directed by the Director of Operations and Executive Director, which are not outlined in the job description but which

             are an important part of NVHA goals and/or program outcomes.

 


Qualifications/Experience

  • OFA level 1;
  • Microsoft Office, fax machine, photo copier;
  • Required to submit a criminal record check prior to employment;
  • Food Safe level one Certificate.

  • Excellent organization, time and general management skills;
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills with adults and youth;
  • Knowledge of drug and alcohol misuse, mental health and behavioral issues;
  • Knowledge of normal child and adolescent development and issues affecting youth;
